How tall can a fence be in Riverside?
In most residential zones, Riverside caps front-yard fences and walls at 4 feet, and anything above 3 feet has to be mostly open. Side and rear fences in single-family zones can be 7 feet if they are not visible from the street. Those are the rules in Municipal Code section 19.550.030 as of November 2026; rural and estate zones allow more in front.

Fence repairWhat does Riverside's code ask of a front fence?
Openness. Above 3 feet, a front fence in most zones must be at least three parts open to one part solid, and no solid wall can rise above 3 feet except pilasters. That is why open iron and picket fences dominate Riverside front yards.
In back, single-family zones allow 7 feet when the fence is not visible from the street, and 8 feet where your lot meets a different zone.
